Planning for the Unknown Unknown

Nassim Teleb, famous for his best-selling book entitled The Black Swan, has been developing his theories for resiliency, robustness, and, most recently, anti-fragility. While not currently engaged with the physical design of our cities (although he is a self-proclaimed champion of "long walks in beautiful urban neighborhoods"), his work speaks volumes to those designers, developers, and policy makers who seek to create places that are resilient to unforeseen events (what he calls Black Swans) that are high impact and highly unpredictable. I can think of no better person to speak about how what we design can be resilient to the types of fiscal events and demographic shifts that have been occurring in the last 5 years. This transcends architectural style and speaks directly to the point of strength, responsiveness, and enduring urbanism.
